The Art of Mindfulness

April 30, 2019

On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June UCS will stage its first ever Mindfulness Weekend – two days of inspiring talks, art and craft demonstrations and workshops designed to help us relax, recharge and get creative.

The Art of Mindfulness is a chance to calm busy minds and learn how the power of creativity and crafting can help us to reap the mental health benefits of being in the moment. Visitors can chat to our artists in residence, watch a variety of art and crafts demonstrations, take part in a selection of mini workshops and hear from a variety of speakers. The event runs from 10am to 4pm each day with plenty of opportunities to enjoy some fabulous food and drink from our café. Admission to our Mindfulness Weekend is free, with a small charge for selected workshops. As well as many of our resident artists being on site for you to meet during the weekend, some are providing talks and workshops for you to join in with.

As well as workshops, we have some amazing speakers coming in throughout the weekend. On Saturday, one of the UK’s leading lights in mindfulness is coming over to from Stafford to run two sessions – one for adults and one for kids. A holistic therapist and teacher, Kate specialises in working with teachers and schools, focusing on energy, mindfulness and relaxation skills. On Sunday, we’re being joined by Jenny Wood, who will be running a ‘Stitch and Bitch’ workshop and talk, introducing us to the concept of using creativity to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Other speakers throughout the weekend include Asha Clearwater, a former journalist and editor, who divides her time between her work as a reiki healer and shamanic practitioner and coaching local business people on creating amazing content to promote help promote their services. Asha will be leading a free workshop on creative writing. Bring along your own notebook and pen and dive in.

Workshops:

Hopscotch Pottery will be offering mandala sgraffito mini workshops, where people can ‘scratch’ designs on tiles. These workshops take a maximum of six people, last for 30-45 minutes, and carry a small fee of £5 per participant. You’ll be able to sign up on the day.

Talks:

Saturday 11am - 12pm   Helping children with anxiety using mindfulness, with Kate Beddow
During this session we will look at the science behind anxiety and why it is so damaging. We will go through some tried and tested methods of easing anxiety and how this can help your child be more confident and achieve more.

Saturday 1pm - 2pm  Calm Workshop for Kids, with Kate Beddow
This workshop will help your child understand the importance of staying calm in stressful situations and give them lots of strategies to use when they begin to feel anxious or worried. We will be making some tools to help us stay calm which can be taken away as a reminder of the skills they have developed. Suitable for the primary age range (4-11 years).

Saturday 3pm - 4pm Creative Writing, with Asha Clearwater
This taster workshop will look at how we can use mindfulness – and the wonder of the world around us – to gather inspiration and get our creative juices flowing. Bring a notebook and pen and let Asha guide you on a journey of creative expression.

Sunday 11am - 1pm Stitch and Bitch, with Jenny Wood
‘Stitch and Bitch’ was a phrase used to describe a social gathering of women in World War II who came together to make, mend and natter. Join Jenny for a talk and experiential workshop, using sewing scraps, paper and pens.

Sunday 2.15pm - 3pm The Art Of Medicine Crafting, with Taz Thornton
Join Taz as she leads through a journey of mindful crafting, weaving in elements of meditation, spirituality and ancient tribal beliefs. In this talk, Taz will guide us through the process of ‘bridging the dream’, telling us how to blend heart and mind to ‘channel’ beautiful pieces of art and craftwork.

We’re sure you will agree, our mindfulness weekend has a little bit of something for everyone. Come along, soak up the beautiful surroundings, and maybe grab yourself a piece of cake from the café… just make sure you eat in mindfully!
