Meet the Artist: Angela Daymond

February 20, 2018

•      Please introduce yourself

My name is Angela Daymond and I have had my studio at Unique for around five years now. As well as a textile artist I am an author, designer, teacher, speaker and have regular shows on Hochanda TV. I teach my workshops worldwide as well as up and down the UK.

•      Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I have always done some form of stitching for as long as I can remember. Both my mother and grandmother knitted and stitched so I was fortunate to grow up with a needle in my hand. I am a fully qualified teacher and spent many happy years in the classroom before a career change to teaching textiles to mainly adults. I have three City and Guilds qualifications in Patchwork and Quilting including a diploma.

•      Tell us about your work and where you find your inspiration

I get my inspiration from many places, but I fell in love with hares after observing them in the fields near my house. As well as in my work, hares feature in my Kantha sewing kits. Inspiration for colour also comes from my home environment. I collect plants and flowers to dye with throughout the year. Tulip dyed textiles are a particular favourite of mine.

•      What do your workshops involve?

I love teaching in my own studio (which has a short flight of stairs to access it). Workshop numbers are between four and six so plenty of time for individual attention if you are a beginner. I teach a wide range of workshops, from hand stitching techniques to free machine quilting and dyeing. I am one of the remaining people in this country to still teach woad dyeing. If you  have never seen a woad vat it is truly magical to see the dyed fabric turn from yellow to green to blue. Look out for a blue washing line outside my studio as that will be the woad. As I always teach small numbers in my studio, workshops are suitable for everyone.

This year I am doing some workshops geared towards total beginners. There is a Know your Sewing Machine workshop on March 15th. This is specifically designed for people just starting out on their sewing journey.

•      How can people contact you or find out more about your work

People can visit my website and sign up for my newsletter. I aim to try and keep the Unique website pages up to date.

March workshops:

Know Your Sewing Machine

Date: 15th March 2018

Time: 10am to 1pm

Cost: £35

This workshop is aimed at total beginners to sewing, or those of you who have had a break from using a sewing machine, and is intended to help you feel more confident with your sewing machine. Angela will teach you all about filling your bobbins, using straight and zigzag stitches, how to change stitch length and width, drop your feed dogs and how to sort out tension issues. You will leave with the confidence to happily use your sewing machine on many more sewing projects. You will practice your skills and make a shopping bag during the workshop.

Please do bring your own sewing machine plus manual, feet, bobbins and cotton thread. If your sewing machine is too heavy you will be able to borrow a studio sewing machine, but please do let me know in

Almost no Sew Boxes

Date: 24th March 2018

Time: 10am to 4pm

Cost: £55

In this workshop you will be guided through how to make a beautiful fabric covered box measuring 5.25” square. You will use pre-cut card and first learn how to draft a box net. You will learn how to cut card safely before starting to cover it in a fabric of your choice. The lid of your box can be embellished in a variety of different ways making everyone’s box totally unique.

The box is almost “no sew” as all you will do is hand stitch one very small seam. This workshop is suitable for all levels and a brilliant introduction to box making. You could make a box for yourself or give it away as a present.

Cardboard is provided. All you need to provide is fabric, thread and cotton wadding.
