Meet the Artist: Deborah Horsfield

January 15, 2018

Deborah Horsfield runs fortnightly printing sessions at Unique Cottage Studios, here she tells us a bit about her background, inspirations and what she can offer.

 Please introduce yourself

I am Deborah Horsfield, I am an artist and tutor, I live near Spalding and run two Wednesday morning printmaking sessions a month at Unique Cottage Studios.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I was brought up in Spilsby, a small market town on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. I loved art at school, but I also loved geography, and that’s what I decided to study. I moved to London in 1979 where I studied, lived and worked for 20 years.

After completing my degree, I worked for a short time in the field of occupational therapy. I then changed direction and made a career in Human Resources where my work was bound by law, policy and procedure, but my focus remained on assisting and developing people.

Nine years ago I took the opportunity to make another change. I took a foundation teaching qualification and then started on a creative journey. I signed up for a new course at City College Peterborough and discovered Printmaking – and it was love from the very first inky moment!   I took NCFE qualifications in printmaking and then started to teach short courses and workshops.

How do you work and where do you find your inspiration?

I am essentially a “Kitchen Table” printer – I use simple accessible materials and equipment, work on a small scale, recycle, and repurpose where I can, and use mainly water based inks. I produce small art prints, make unique cards and wrapping paper, and have recently started printing onto fabric.

I am a life-long doodler and admirer of pattern and colour. My inspiration comes from the things I see around me; the landscape, day to day things around my home, and the creative work of other designers and artists.

What can people expect from your printing sessions?

My sessions are small, friendly and informal and include demonstrations, instruction and support, and then time to practice and experiment (with plenty of tea and biscuits to keep us going!). The techniques I cover over the course of the year include relief printing, dry-point, mono-print, collagraph, simple silkscreen techniques, and design principles for print. All the sessions are suitable for beginners and for experienced artists who are looking to add printmaking techniques to their creative tool kit.
